Fine restaurants, cultural and recreational activities, golf, parks, hiking, biking, touring, wineries, and even dinosaur ruins are just a few of the things you can enjoy in Grand Junction and the surrounding areas. Here’s a quick look at out local communities and surrounding areas:
Montrose
Strategically located in the center of the Uncompahgre Valley on the Western Slope of Colorado, Montrose County is the kind of Colorado people dream about. The Colorado Rockies lie directly east, the spires of the San Juans sparkle just 25 miles south, the largest flat-top mountain in the world looms 40 miles to the north, while the world renowned hunting grounds of the Uncompahgre Plateau frame the western sunset. Located 260 miles southwest of Denver, Montrose is a transportation crossroads with U.S. Highways 50 and 550 intersecting in the city, and air service provided by major carriers at the Montrose Regional Airport.
Montrose lies at an elevation of 5,794 feet above sea level, has mild summers and winters with minimal snow accumulation in the area of the city, making a great four season playground. We average 227 to 274 days of sunshine each year, with a growing season of approximately 150 days.
Population in the city of Montrose is approximately 13,000 and the metropolitan area (a 10 mile radius) has a population of 30,000. Montrose, Colorado, is also the home of the Black Canyon National Park. With a combination of Older homes and brand new developments there is no doubt Montrose is the perfect place to call home.
Delta
The largest community in Delta County, and the county seat, Delta is home to approximately 6,500 residents. Another 4,000 inhabitants can be found within a five-mile radius of Delta. The county has a population of approximately 26,700.
According to Rand McNally's Places Rated Retirement Guide, Delta has been rated in the top one-third of communities for climate, housing, health care, personal safety, economics and recreation.
Delta is a great place to visit but even a better place to live. It is a small, rural agricultural community, but not so small that you have to go out of town to obtain the "necessities of life." Grand Junction is about 42 miles north of Delta on hwy. 50; Montrose lies 21 miles south on Hwy. 50.
Delta Country is rich agricultural valleys and bountiful orchards cradled by lake-strewn mountains, vast forests and enticing desert canyons. Here lies the bounty of western Colorado complemented by raw splendor and unique attractions.
After you've explored the countryside, relax at Devil's Thumb Golf Club a brand new two year-round golf courses of 18 holes providing challenging tees to fit the skills of a number of players.
North/Northwest of Grand Junction
The neighborhoods North and Northwest of Grand Junction are the perfect marriage of charming country style and the metropolitan city. If you are looking to live in an open, with a rural feeling but don't want to stray too far from the city, this is the perfect part of town to find your dream home.
You will find that many of the properties here offer fantastic views of the sun-drenched Bookcliffs to the north and the Grand Mesa to the east, not to mention the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets all year-round.
Nearby Bookcliff Country Club offers 18 hole golf, tennis, swimming and club activities.
Palisade, East Orchard Mesa & Whitewater
Lying at the foot of Mount Garfield and the Grand Mesa, is Colorado's popular Wine and Peach country meeting with the Colorado River as it spills out of Debeque canyon and flows calmly to the Gulf of Mexico. The mood at the foot of town is calm, friendly and down-to-earth but you only have to travel up canyon to find the exciting tony resorts of Glenwood Springs and Aspen.
Palisade is a small town built along the banks of the river, where you will find all year around you'll access to BLM land and open range.
East Orchard Mesa and the pleasant little town of Whitewater overlook the pastoral beauty of Unaweep Canyon country, and the Uncompaghre plateau. With Grand Junction never more than a 20-minute drive away, these stunning communities offer the best of both worlds.
Clifton/Northeast
Just to the east of Grand Junction, the vistas of Bookcliffs and the Grand Mesa offer a constant reminder of the fishing, skiing, hiking and horseback riding, not to mention the occasional glimpse of wild mustangs.
A variety of mature neighborhoods mixed with newer developments area many options for home buyers. Coronado and Eastgate Shopping Centers provide convenient shopping, while the North Avenue business corridor and the Airport are only a few minutes away.
Redlands
The Redlands offer the best views of the Colorado National Monument. Local homes take a naturalistic style and are landscaped in a high desert motif; others make use of plentiful Colorado River irrigation water to present a more lush appearance. With a constant variety of living options there’s a perfect home waiting for you in the Redlands
The Redlands Parkway provides easy access to the Mesa Mall and downtown in a matter of a few minutes. The brand new Redlands Mesa Golf Course right in your back yard offers some of the best views in the Western United States.
Fruita/West
A beautiful agricultural area known for its Small farms and horse pastures, these neighborhoods offer a mix of prestigious home estates and smaller developments creating an expansive, peaceful atmosphere. Fruita offers many conveniences of the city while the Dinosaur Museum and Adobe Creek Golf Course showcase the diversity of the recreation opportunities. Easy living in a purely aesthetic surrounding and Grand Junction is still only twenty minutes away.
Orchard Mesa/Southeast
Here you will find a wealth of breathtaking views making up the southern border of the Grand Junction metropolitan area. Orchard Mesa sits above both the Colorado River and Grand Junction proper, so the residents of Orchard Mesa look out across the entire town. Views of the Grand Mesa to the east, Colorado National Monument to the West, and the majestic San Juan mountains to the south, you can’t ask for much more when it comes to awe-inspiring scenic surroundings.
Easy-access BLM land opens up at the edge of Orchard Mesa, along with the Gunnison river valley. Shopping is convenient at the Orchard Mesa Shopping Center, and the area is home to Chipeta, one of the valley's newer golf courses.
A mix of older homes and plenty of newer properties and developments make for a wide variety of available real estate.
Glade Park
Quiet and secluded, Glade Park is only accessible through the Colorado National Monument. If your priorities are privacy and wide open spaces, Glade Park is the perfect place for you. This is one of the more sparsely populated parts of the Grand Junction area, and there's plenty of room for horses, along with endless opportunities for outdoors exploration. Only 2o minutes away from downtown Grand Junction, Glade Park offers a peaceful retreat from the city the best view of Colorado’s lush meadowlands and famous aspen trees.
The City (Grand Junction)
Located just 250 miles west of Denver along the north side of the Colorado River is Western Colorado’s fastest growing city, Grand Junction. Climate
Grand Junction offers a mild climate with dry, warm summers and moderate winters. On average the sun shines in Grand Junction three out of four days. With such a mild climate Grand Junction is the hub of some of the finest and most varied recreational activities in Colorado.
Recreation
The City of Grand Junction Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to facilitating a level of municipal Parks and Recreation services and facilities that the citizens of Grand Junction want and demand in the most efficient and effective manner possible.
Under the direction of Joe Stevens the department provides a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities in attractive, clean and safe surroundings as well as enhancing and preserving the region’s natural resources. Courteous and knowledgeable personnel strive for excellence in all aspects of administration, operation and maintenance.
The Parks and Recreation Department offers numerous instructional classes ranging from scuba and tennis lessons to landscaping and exercise classes. Competitive sports offered include volleyball, basketball, track and field, tennis and softball.
Spectator sports are numerous throughout the year featuring area high schools and Mesa State College. Grand Junction is the proud host of the National Junior College Baseball World Series, where the ten best teams in the nation gather at Lincoln Park, Stocker Stadium and Suplizio Baseball Field to decide the national championship.
Golf, tennis and biking can be enjoyed in the Grand Valley nearly year-round. The local Powder horn Ski Resort provides excellent downhill skiing for skiers of all abilities, and some of the finest cross-country skiing areas can be found on the nearby Grand Mesa. Within an hour of Grand Junction the outdoor enthusiast can hunt, fish, water-ski, ride horses, follow jeep trails and snowmobile. Raft trips on some of the best rapids in the country are available just outside of Grand Junction.

A long-established agricultural industry and a growing manufacturing industry and tourist trade provide Grand Junction with a diversified economic base. Because it serves as the supply center for many smaller towns in a large part of western Colorado and eastern Utah, Grand Junction has the amenities and opportunities of a community several times its size. The Grand Junction Metropolitan Area, with a population of 100,000, serves as the transportation, medical, professional and cultural center of western Colorado.
